Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has won an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah lived in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties when her mother gave her the stage name Latifah that means gentle and loving in Arabic. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She sang the song Home from the show The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her career in beatboxing. Latifah is among the original members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King made a demo recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
