Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical household on August 9, 1963, at Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. As a child, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. When she turned 15years old, Houston was singing professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 song Im Every Woman. Then she went on to join the backing vocals of Jermaine, Lou Rawls, and her mother. Her work as the featured vocalist of New York funk group Material was noticed by major record labels, including Arista and Arista, which she was signed in 1982, and remained for the remainder of career. The year 1985 saw Whitney Houston's first album was one of the most successful debut albums ever.
