Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived to a musical family 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin to singing superstar Dionne. In her early years, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark. At the age of she was 15years old, Houston was singing professionally with backing vocals alongside her mother in Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. Then, she performed background vocals for Lou Rawls & Jermaine jackson and her mother. Her work as the featured vocalist of New York funk group Material was noticed by big record companies, like Arista who she signed in 1982 and continued to work for the remainder of her life. Whitney Houston, her debut album, released in 1985 was the highest-selling album for a debut singer. The album contained several hit songs including How Will I know You're Good to Me, Saving All My Love For you and The greatest Love of All. It was instrumental in her achieving seven US charts-topping singles in a row which surpasses the Beatles. The album came out in 1987 and has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney featuring the hit songs Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built the foundation of her popularity, however it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard (1992) that established her as one of the top-selling performers of all time. While the movie itself and the performances in it weren't widely appreciated, the album's soundtrack and her version to the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You topped the charts of albums and singles for months, and was sold at 44 million copies around the globe. In the same year she welcomed her daughter Bobbi Brown, she got married to Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. At this point the drug use was well-documented and she was able to use it regularly until 1996.
